What is IRC? How does Black Wyrm IRC work?

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It works similar to the messenger programs ( ICQ, AIM etc), with some differences.

Internet Relay Chat happens in chatrooms. In order to join a chat, you need to connect to the server. You'll need an IRC client program, mIRC is a good choice for Windows users. Alternatively, you can connect by using our JavaChat login form on this page (see above).

On IRC, nicknames are used. It's similar to your forum username - a name that will be used by others when they address you. In an IRC chatroom (it's called a public channel), you will see a user list, the list of nicknames of those who are in that chatroom. If you type some text and then hit Enter, it will appear on the channel's main window and all users will see it. In a similar way, you'll also see what others say (type). Channel names start with a # character. Examples: #BlackWyrm, #Help. You can be on more than one channel at the same time (in your IRC client program, different chatrooms will probably appear as separate windows)

Here are some basic commands you can type. You can type these to the same field that you use for typing your sentences. Thus, all commands must start with a '/' (slash) so it will detected that it's a server command and it won't appear on the channel as text. This might not be understandable for users who've never tried IRC, but you'll understand everything when you try them out!
So some basic commands (I won't try to explain them, you'll see their effect when using them):
/me <text> -- will do an action
/join #channelname -- will join a channel
/part #channelname -- will leave a channel you're on
/quit -- will disconnect you (you will exit from the server)

/query <nick> -- opens a PRIVATE CHANNEL with another user. The discussion can be seen ONLY by yourself and the other user.

You might see an odd nickname on the user list while on our IRC: IronGolem. This user has a nick but IronGolem isn't a real user (not a real person). It is a so-called bot. Bots can perform various operations. You can use the following commands (type them in the chatroom normally, as if you were talking):
!seen <user> - IronGolem will tell you information about that user (for example the date and time of his/her last visit on the chat)
!randomquote - tells a quote from the IE modding/gaming world
!news - will display the daily news of BBC. You can give additional parameters as well. If you want sport news, type !news sport. If you wish news from the Middle East, type !news middle east. You can also receive news about science and technology by typing !news science and !news technology. It has a lot of other parameters as well, type !news help to see them all.
These commands can be used on any channel where IronGolem is present.

Have fun!
